Title: Please Advance Review of MAPS Policies 466, 467, 471, and 524

Dear Dr. Peterson, Ms. Pratt, and Ms. Roberts,

I am writing as a constituent to ask you to advance Board Member Elizabeth Hanke’s policy proposals and recommendations for legal review, Policy Committee consideration, and discussion by the full School Board.

These proposals address several important issues:

• Policy 467: Strengthening evaluations of principals and directors by including school safety, orderly learning environments, administrative support for teachers, consistent discipline procedures, and meaningful confidential feedback from teachers and staff.
• Policy 466: Reviewing the policy’s race-specific provisions concerning mentoring, stipends, affinity groups, and professional development; obtaining a written legal opinion; reporting how these provisions have been implemented and funded; and considering objective, job-related eligibility criteria.
• Policies 524 and 471: Clarifying the district’s authority over off-campus speech, distinguishing between the legal standards that apply to students and employees, protecting lawful personal expression, and preserving the district’s ability to respond to genuine threats, severe harassment, security breaches, confidentiality violations, and substantial disruptions.

Supporting this review does not require agreement with every proposed amendment. It supports a careful and transparent process involving the Policy Committee, district administration, legal counsel, community input, and the full School Board.

Please move these proposals forward for review and return them to the School Board for public discussion and first readings when the necessary legal and operational reviews are complete.
