I’d like to share an insightful opportunity for high school students that might not be widely known. The Dual Enrollment program, available through institutions like South Central College, Minnesota State University and Bethany Lutheran College, offers a fantastic pathway to advance educational opportunities while still in high school — at no cost to the students.
My children have benefited from dual enrollment — also known as PSEO — at SCC and MSU. Starting as a sophomore in high school, a student can enroll in skills classes at SCC, which has accessible entrance requirements. Achieving a “C” or above allows for further participation in the program.
Beyond academics, MSU offers an enriching array of more than 200 clubs that enhance the college experience. Students may join clubs or create new clubs — ensuring a vibrant student life.
Moreover, both institutions provide tutoring services. My daughter found tutoring invaluable during her English class assignment at SCC. This support underscores the colleges’ commitment to assisting students in their academic journey.
While it’s true that participating in PSEO may mean missing out on specific high school social experiences, the trade-off includes significant educational and financial benefits alongside the opportunity to engage in college-level social activities, some designed specifically for PSEO students.
This program benefits the students by making college education more accessible and affordable but also serves the community by preparing students for the workforce earlier, contributing positively to the business ecosystem.
In essence, dual enrollment offers a win-win situation for students, families, and the broader community, underscoring the value of seizing such educational opportunities.
Take advantage of this opportunity. Inquire at your local college or university.
